Allison Andrews- Oral History

Allison Andrews (born 1916) was my grandmother Rachel Charlotte Andrews' first cousin. He was the son of my grandmother's 'Uncle Ebbie,' or Ebenezer Andrews. Ebbie married Elizabeth Florence Kelland, and had several children: Minnie, Allison, Margaret, Raymond, Lillian, Harold, & Robert. In the following account, Allison talks about his early schooling during the 'old' days in Newfoundland.
Part 1: School:
"I will always remember the first day I went to school because I had a piece of slate, a piece of pencil, and a bookbag to carry it in. When I got to school I had to sit on a stool with no back on it and if you leaned back you would end up in someone's lap. My little feet were just swinging off the floor. I had a bookbag that my mother made out of calico which is the same kind of material an apron was made out of. My mother never had enough calico to make the strap so she made it out of a different material. The strap was so long that one day the bookbag hit off my leg and broke my slate.
"The first thing you had to do in the morning was take a junk of wood to school with you for the stove. You weren't allowed to take a dry junk so you had a soggy one. You were expecting to warm yourself with a wet junk down in school. You would go up to your house for recess at eleven o'clock and you might get a bit of bread and you might not. If you had two slices for your breakfast you wouldn't get any for recess. There was nothing on the bread, only lassie (molasses).
"While going to school, I got as far as grade three."

Name Origins- Andrews

My grandmother Rachel's father was an Andrews.
The Andrews families I am descended from arrived to Scilly Cove from England in the early 1700's. According to Seary's "Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland," Andrews is a surname of England, Ireland, and Scotland. It has a Greek origin meaning 'manly.' The Andrews surname is widespread in the Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Cornwell, and Devon counties of England. It is also found in Dublin, Ireland. The first Andrews appearing in the area of Scilly Cove, Newfoundland was a Charles Andrews on the 1793 census. I am a descendent of his son, James Andrews, and his grandson, Jacob Andrews. Pinhorn Ancestors

On the maternal side, my grandmother is a descendent of the Pinhorn families, originally from England. Here is a picture of some of the Pinhorn ancestors. The woman seated is Minnie Pinhorn, & the man standing is Abraham Pinhorn (not confirmed). The woman on the right is definitely my great-grandmother Jedidah.

Name Origins- Pinhorn

My grandmother, Rachel Charlotte, was the descendent of two Winterton families-- the Pinhorns and the Andrews. As far as I know, the Pinhorn family was in the Trinity and Scilly Cove (Winterton) region of Newfoundland since the late 1600's. According to Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland by E.R. Seary (updated 1998), Pinhorn is a surname of England. It may be a place name. The Old English word for 'pin' is 'pine,' and 'horn' means 'a projecting headland, a horn shaped hill.' Pinhorn is variously spelled Pinhorne. According to family lore, four Pinhorn brothers from Devonshire began trading in the Trinity region in the late 1600's. A few of them settled in Scilly Cove. A Benjamin Pinhorn, a fisherman, is found on the 1757 census.

Newfoundland Travel Diary 1990

I have visited Newfoundland 3 times: 1987, 1990, and 2003. Each time I kept a travel diary. Here is an excerpt from my 1990 trip. I was 27 at the time, and accompanied my great Uncle Nehemiah back from a trip he took to Boston to visit my grandmother.

June 19, 1990 St. John's Newfoundland
I walk around wondering if I could live here. I guess it is difficult to get a job teaching in St. John's, so I'd have to go to an outport community. I would like that though I'd have to find a way into St. John's occasionally. There are limited resources here. There's a feminist quarterly called "Waterlily,' a couple of bookstores, one record store, a few coffeehouses, and a nature food store. Some of the Victorian townhouses downtown are grand. They're painted orange and light green, like San Francisco. I suppose rent would not be that much cheaper; I don't know. It's worth looking in to. There are some young people here. I met a woman here working on her master's thesis in folk music. She was from New Hampshire. There seem to be a small number of American and British exiles here. I would like to visit Memorial University and see if I can establish a penpal.

June 18th, 1990
Today I walked around the older part of St. John's. This was charming. I want to go to Cape Spear if I can again. Tomorrow I plan to go to Signal Hill for lunch. Some Newfoundland phrases/ endearments I've noted:

June 19, 1990
Today I met a man on Duckworth Street. He's the proprietor of a small shop called 'The World of Gifts.' He had watercolors selling there by my grandmother's first cousin, Arthur Andrews. He is the son of my grandmother's Uncle Thomas. Arthur lives on Franklyn Street in St. John's and has two brothers, George and Frank. Arthur lived in Winterton. Uncle Nehemiah knows him but says he hasn't seen him in twenty years.
